To continue where we left off with the previous article of this Alchemy in Popular Music series, we will decipher yet another song that has to do with alchemical dissolution. Just as Bring On the Dancing Horses was about welcoming the Apocalypse, so too is this little number...

Break It Down Again, by Tears Tor Fears. Songwriters: Orzabal, Roland/Griffiths, Alan.

When it's all mixed up
Better break it down
In the world of secrets
In the world of sound

The world of secrets you say? My oh my, how these lyrics are cryptic, but what unutterable secrets are being referred to here? Certainly we can all understand how our modern world is all mixed up. There is no secret there. So what is the big secret being withheld? Surprise, surprise, it can be found woven within the verses of this very song. As usual, we must take our time and actually think about the messages being conveyed. Clearly we can hear a theme of conflict. If we are to better understand this conflict (that of a mixed up world) then we must also be sure to take a good long look at its proposed solution, or in this case dis-solution.

Break It Down Again: This is the grand solution espoused here in order to save a Mad World. Again, the main point to be understood is that this song is actually being sung in alchemical terms. The Solve et Coagula, or destroy and rebuild alchemical formula is actually being promoted in this song. The actual presentation that is used to communicate such a serious theme is also incredibly interesting to note. The mood and tempo of Break It Down Again are extremely upbeat. Without a doubt this piece is crafted in such a way as to get the listener excited and inspired.

So those are my dreams
And these are my eyes
Stand tall like a man
Head a strong like a horse

Courage in the face of adversity is always a good thing to promote, but the concept is taken much further here. This a a triumphant celebration of the Grand Breakdown itself. The whole point of this song is to instill a sense of reverence in the mind, heart, and soul of the listener for the breakdown of old social norms. This truly is a glorious ode to the worldwide alchemical process that underpins so many of the seemingly random and unrelated newsworthy happenings of our chaotic age of transitions. We can hear many lyrical references to the elusive "Architects of Life" who, unbeknownst to most of us, are eager participants in bringing this all about.

So those are my schemes
And these are my plans
Hot tips for the boys
Fresh news from the force

Very interesting language is used here. Astute viewers will also notice that the imagery in the official music video coincides with the many lyrical references to the hidden Builders. We see men working away with squares and compasses on backlit drawing tables. This can be viewed as an encrypted signature, as it is such boys (secret society members) who no doubt put much labor into bringing this song to the eager ears of John Q. Public. Wild rock n' roll radio listeners need to be "played to," and this message is conveyed quite clearly.

Horsin' around
Pray to the power
Play to the crowd with your big hit sound
And they won't simmer, won't simmer, won't simmer down
Play to the crowd
Play to the crowd
Play yeah

A difficult aspect of this entire process is getting the audience to actually "pray to the power." What power? The power that is inherent in alchemy. The power of the Alchemist himself. Through the artful and skilled production of popular music this power is made manifest. When the crowd, the masses, hear such a rocking sound they simply cannot simmer down. They get (alchemically) fired up. This is the very same fire that is used to burn down the old world in order to make way for the new. It is the powerful force of the incensed crowd.

Break it down again
No more sleepy dreaming
No more building up
It is time to dissolve

Sometimes the Alchemist needs to break down his very own creation so that he may expand it all the further. Believe it or not, this explains much of what is happening in our world today. So much of the chaos, turmoil, and destruction to which we bear witness is being brought about purposely. It is all part of a process. Ruins of past civilizations have been used to build the foundations of new ones. This beguiling trend in history has often been explained away as a natural cycle, and within this very explanation lies the essence of an occult philosophy/religion. It is the religion of the Natural Man. It is up to you to decide just how natural all of this is. In doing so you will take the true power back.
